Ceramic tile has been manufactured for thousands of years – the term is often used as a ”catch-all” term for a variety of wall and floor covering products, each having its own unique characteristics and appeal. Ceramic tiles are made from mixtures of clay, sand and other natural materials which have been shaped and fired at a high temperature to harden the clay to a durable surface.
Porcelain tiles are ceramic tile with a water absorption rating of less than 0.5%, and are fired at a higher temperature resulting in a denser and more water-resistant product than standard ceramic tile. This makes it more stable, especially in outdoor settings.
More recently, some companies have introduced HIGH DENSITY CERAMIC TILE – a revolutionary hybrid technology that fuses the technical characteristics of ceramic and porcelain tile. The result is a ceramic that features all the benefits of porcelain, at an affordable price.
The new products are pressed at a higher density than standard ceramic tile, and fired at the same temperature as porcelain. They can be finished with the same glaze as porcelain, resulting in higher performance standards and making it suitable for outdoor installations.
Northern Glass, Tile and Stone carries high density ceramic products by Interceramic; the only ceramic tile product in North America which is currently being produced with digital print technology. High density ceramic products are offered in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and finishes to accommodate almost any design idea, and are often priced lower than their porcelain counterparts.
